Sustainable mid-century Dutch barn conversion and new build

In the picturesque setting of the Cotswolds, a once-derelict and fire damaged Mid-century Dutch barn has undergone a stunning transformation. This remarkable project sought to pay homage to its rich agricultural heritage and the local context while infusing the space with modern, open-plan living, creating a harmonious blend of past and present.

The central goal of this conversion and new build was to retain the barn's authentic and genuinely historic presentation. It was essential to use materials and finishes that not only celebrated its agricultural legacy but also seamlessly integrated with the surrounding landscape. The Cotswolds are known for their distinctive charm, and the design aimed to respect and reflect this local identity.

The barn's character had to be carefully preserved, ensuring that the conversion did not deviate significantly from its origins. This required a delicate balance between historical reverence and contemporary functionality. The design team understood the importance of the barn's roots and the need to safeguard its integrity.

Drawing inspiration from the historic Dutch barn at Lower Lemington and the adjacent single-storey stone barn, the design and choice of materials followed a meticulously curated palette. Full height deep inset glazing with corrugated zinc and vertical Sweet Chestnut cladding fused the architectural and contemporary vernaculars. Each element was thoughtfully selected to pay tribute to the region's architectural heritage, creating a seamless transition between the past and the present.

The heart of the conversion lies in the creation of modern, open-plan living spaces. Expansive glazing was strategically incorporated to forge a strong connection between the interior and the breathtaking surrounding landscape. This design approach serves to bring the outdoors in, making the most of the picturesque views that the location has to offer.

The successful conversion of the Mid-century Dutch barn stands as a testament to the power of harmonious design. It is a beautiful fusion of history and modern living, showcasing the essence of its agricultural legacy within a contemporary framework. The barn now stands as a true jewel in the heart of the Cotswolds, bridging the gap between the past and the present, offering a unique space that encapsulates the region's distinctive charm while providing all the comforts of modern living. It's a space where history and contemporary life coexist in perfect harmony, ensuring its legacy continues for generations to come.
